CAIRO, Egypt 2020 – “Listen to Cairo. Creative Fieldrecording Workshop” @Darb1718 Cultural Center.

Rooftop at Darb1718 Cultural Center

Opening of the sound compositions made by students during a workshop held at Darb1718 Cultural Center in Cairo, Egypt as part of the project “Listen to Cairo”. The students compositions were played from a quadrophonic setup – the black loudspeakers  in the corners of the roof, the wall made of radios in the background is a piece by Benoit Maubrey. The students explored Cairos soundscape and sonic peculiarities via fieldrecording, composing short sonic pieces and playing these sounds into the open space from the rooftop. Layers of composed and altered sounds were fading into the city sounds. The different approaches to work with fieldrecording in an artistic way, created different perspectives on the soundscapes found in the city and played back altered into the cities noise. With the compositions along to the already existent unpredictable city noise, a new soundscape emerges.
